New coach named for Iowa Cyclones football program
Many expected Campbell to jump ship at some point, but did not expect Iowa State to be his top pick.
Toledo head coach Matt Campbell was named Iowa State’s new football coach on Sunday, replacing Paul Rhoads. “I could not be more excited to welcome Matt, Erica and their children to the Cyclone Family. It’s been insane. But as fate has led us here, I am beyond thankful and grateful to be the new leader of this football program”. The Cyclones finished the season at 3-9 overall, including a lackluster 2-7 record against Big 12 competition.
“You know, we’re starting over”, said ISU kicker Cole Netten. “He’s had obviously more than his fair share of guys to deal with with injuries for some period of time and he’s worked with a lot of the guys – Ken’s obviously one of them – to help those guys come back and help them get healthy”, Groce said. “It was my first two games, so I’m still trying to get in a rhythm and the flow of the game”. It was the Green Wave’s first bowl appearance in 11 years, but Tulane has won only six games combined the last two seasons.
IL trailed for much of the game but trimmed Iowa State’s lead to 65-62 with 7:42 to play, before the Cyclones went on a decisive 10-0 run. Iowa State will pay a $200,000 buyout to bring Campbell aboard, sources said. Their fans, the game-day environment and facilities are all incredible. In seven seasons in Ames, Rhoads went 32-54, but the Cyclones have been a woeful 8-28 the past three seasons. “My family and I are truly humbled”. Campbell is supposed to be interviewing Saturday night with Missouri AD Mack Rhoades, According to PowerMizzou, Rhoades would also like to interview Temple head coach Matt Ruhle. Monte Morris has his typically great assist-to-turnover ratio thanks to games like the Virginia Tech contest (7-to-1) and previously the Chattanooga game (10-to-1). During his opening remarks Monday, Pollard said Campbell was his first choice in his coaching search. The players are ready for a fresh start.
“He is a pretty cool guy”, Warren said. When I was at halfcourt I saw him point up.
The anticipated announcement would come on Campbell’s 36th birthday, making him the youngest at a Power Five school. So when Iowa State offered, Campbell didn’t hesitate.
Iowa State has a coach its coach of the future and we look forward to seeing what the Cyclones can do going forward.
“I thought the first 15 minutes we were in rotation defensively where we were giving up uncontested shots and offensive rebounds”, Williams said. “He is really laid back”. “I think he has every piece to the puzzle”.
