Seattle Seahawks’ Jimmy Graham Injured Knee During Game with Pittsburgh
“You can’t get challenged more in a game than (the Steelers) challenged him, and he made play after play after play”.
Seattle Seahawks tight end Jimmy Graham incurred a season-ending torn patella tendon in his right leg on Sunday, denting the team’s hopes of making a run for their third successive Super Bowl appearance.
Graham, a big-money signing over the summer from the New Orleans Saints, went down clutching his knee early in the fourth quarter as he attempted to reach back and haul in a pass from Wilson.
There were questions of what his role was supposed to be after Graham caught just one pass in Week 2 against Green Bay.
The NFC West-leading Arizona Cardinals made it five wins in a row by edging past the San Francisco 49ers 19-13, while Russell Wilson’s career-high five touchdown passes inspired the Seattle Seahawks to a thrilling 39-30 triumph over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“It is kind of an unorthodox way to play and win the football game”, coach Pete Carroll said. The Steelers only had 14 rushing attempts and five of those were Roethlisberger scrambles.
It didn’t matter, though, because Ben Roethlisberger was going to test that defense no matter what.
Roethlisberger threw for 456 yards – the most ever against the Seahawks – but was pulled with 2 minutes left and taken to the locker room.
Wilson finished 21 of 30 for 345 yards and connected on his final six passes of the game, three of them going for touchdowns. It was only during his stint with Seattle this year that he was bound to miss all games after the 10th game. The Seahawks took a 32-27 lead in the fourth quarter of a thrilling shootout with this score.
The Kansas City Chiefs are having a similar season to the Seahawks, having won their last five games to emerge as the AFC’s No. 6 seed with a 6-5 record. It wasn’t happening. So now the Hawks are actually in the playoff hunt – they hold the sixth spot right now thanks to a tiebreaker with Atlanta – with another huge game looming next Sunday in Minnesota. Those miscues happen every so often with players, but twice in the same game? So many challenges back and forth for both teams. “We spent a little time with him just to show him the love because he just needs it and deserves it to try to bring him back through it”. They were on it today, man – they were tough to stop.
The Seahawks were seemingly at their best on third-and-long. Meanwhile, the Steelers came in with a 6-4 record.
The Seattle Seahawks quarterback hit Doug Baldwin for three touchdowns, including an 8o-yard catch-and-run in the fourth quarter, and hit Jermaine Kearse on the other two. Richard Sherman did a commendable job for the most part of keeping Antonio Brown out of it-Brown had six catches on 12 targets for 51 yards-but Shead and Lane struggled throughout the day to keep pace with Roethlisberger’s targets. Carroll said during his appearance on “Brock and Salk” Monday that he didn’t know when that surgery will take place but that Graham should be full speed by the start of next season.
“We felt like the opportunities were there today in the pass game and they were”, Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said. Moments before the injury, Graham set up a touchdown with an acrobatic catch on another long pass from Wilson. “We talked about it going into this game, that was one of our goals, and we didn’t accomplish that”. The Steelers did not target Wheaton way more than any other wide receiver, he was just able to do more with his receptions.
