Officer shot while responding to domestic dispute

Shetler was captured around 3:15 a.m. after a six-hour manhunt while walking near a power plant outside New Florence, about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Police were called to a domestic situation in New Florence shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday.

Shetler’s girlfriend told police she saw him walk toward Reed and argue with the officer, who shouted repeatedly, “Ray, put down the gun, put down the gun”, Limani said.

Shetler was being treated at a hospital under police guard for an unspecified injury Sunday. Shetler was charged with homicide Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, in connection with the fatal shooting a police officer who responded to a domestic dispute.

Police said that Shetler had previously had incidents that involved police, but nothing that approached the current situation. He had spent 20 years as an officer in Seven Spring borough before that department disbanded. It really is tough. “He is not that type of person”.

“It’s a tragedy, and none of us can believe it”, Porter said.

Luther told dispatchers Shetler was drunk and had hit her. The dispatchers could hear arguing and things breaking, Limani said. When she arrived, the woman, whom she called Shetler’s girlfriend, was on the ground, trying to assist the officer. “I thought something was wrong with Ray”.

Porter and Kenley extended their condolences to Reed’s family, even as they tried to piece together the circumstances that led to the shooting. “She also said he was threatening to kill her and himself”.

Police said he was shot in the torso with a rifle. “Then, she advised him [police] were there”, Limani said.
