Two men arrested over shooting at Minneapolis Black Lives Matter protest
Police claim he was interfering with emergency responders who were treating the victim when he was shot. Clark’s family has requested an end to the protests but Black Lives matter Minneapolis plans to return on Tuesday for another demonstration despite the shooting and safety concerns.
Clark was shot and killed by two Minneapolis police officers November 15.
Also Tuesday, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman issued a statement saying it will be up to a grand jury to decide whether to charge the police officers in connection with Clark’s death.
A Facebook event page, hosted by the Minneapolis chapter of Black Lives Matter and promoting Tuesday afternoon’s planned protest, alleges that “4 White Supremacists shot 5 unarmed protesters” Monday night. Noor called the shooting attack “an act of terrorism” and vowed to keep protesting.
The Minneapolis Star Tribunereports Allen Lawrence “Lance” Scarsella III, 23, was arrested in Bloomington, while 21-year-old Nathan Gustavsson of Hermantown and Daniel Macey, 26, of Pine City, were taken into custody after they turned themselves in.
U of MN students rally against white supremacist shooting of Black Lives Matter protesters. Earlier on Monday, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton said he reviewed video footage taken from the back of an ambulance and said it does not appear to show conclusively what happened in Clark’s shooting.
Alexander Dewan Apprentice Clark, who said he chased the opponents, said when Clark helped him up, he believed what he thought to be a bulletproof vest beneath the man’s clothing and among the men fell.
He declined to say whether the FBI was investigating the shooting as a possible hate crime.
Alleged white supremacists had shown up at the scene at least two nights in the past week, dancing and jeering at protesters.
Similarly, officials have seized upon the Monday shootings to bolster the image of the police in the wake of the outrage over Jamar Clark’s killing.
The names of the three men have not been released.
The assault took place at a protest, which has been underway since the fatal shooting of Jamar Clark nearly two weeks ago, in memory of the deceased man.
Police said little else about the arrests. A half-hour later, a 32-year-old Hispanic man was arrested in south Minneapolis.
Authorities said none of the five victims suffered life-threatening injuries.
Police haven’t released a possible motive for the shootings of the protesters, but the shootings came after several racially disparaging comments about the protests were posted on social media. According to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension – the state agency investigating the shooting – they have both been with the Minneapolis police for a little more than a year, and both have been officers for seven years. Black Lives Matter Minneapolis and the NAACP have come together to host a day of celebration, a day of mourning and a day of community after we face this horrific tragedy last night.
Asked why he returned after being shot, Martin said: “Bullets aren’t going to stop me from supporting what I wish to do”. Almost 1,000 demonstrators marched on city hall on Tuesday to protest the shooting and to demand justice.
