Mike London Era Has Ended At UVA
Virginia Tech announced the beginning of a new era for Hokie football, introducing newly hired head coach Justin Fuente at a press conference on Monday. Shortly after it was announced that Fuente would be the new head coach, it was also announced that Foster would maintain his position on the staff.
Both Virginia and Virginia Tech – along with other Eastern teams like Maryland and Syracuse – will have new coaches in 2015.
Littlepage met with London Sunday morning to discuss the future of the football program and he says they decided a change in leadership was in the best interests of the program.
“During his tenure, Mike created a positive culture for our student-athletes to develop as young men, who improved each year in the classroom and represented us very well in the community”, Littlepage said in a prepared statement. At Murray State, he set 11 school records before graduating in 1999. Despite various opportunities throughout the years to seize momentum and make a run at postseason play, the London era will be remembered for quality recruiting results that never materialized on the field.
The Cavaliers finished this year with a road losing streak that has reached 15 games.
Fuente is known as an offensive coach and has the Tigers at No. 12 at the FBS level in total offense, with 5,642 yards this season. Also, seven players have been arrested since August, though charges were dropped against star receiver Leontee Carroo. The Tigers will have Miles and running back Leonard Fournette back in 2016, and there will be high expectations in Baton Rouge, as there is every season.
He was awarded a $2.7-million buyout for the one year remaining on his contract. He mentions Greg Schiano (former Rutgers coach), Matt Rhule (current Temple coach), Al Golden (former Miami coach and former UVA assistant), and Troy Calhoun (current Air Force coach) as candidates that could get consideration.
Campbell’s first win came in the 2011 Military Bowl after Tim Beckman left Toledo for IL. The Wahoos lost 10 games by eight points or fewer that past two years, including Saturday’s season-ending loss to the Hokies.
