Georgia’s Mark Richt not done, interested in another coaching job
During the postgame press conference last Saturday, Miles indicated that he will be considering making changes to an offense that struggled immensely down the stretch. Richt wore the school’s colors on his tie and team logo on a lapel pin and a wristband underneath the cuff of his shirt. Another referred to him as “the ultimate ambassador” for the school. UGA offered him an undefined, non-coaching role.
“I don’t know if it’s necessary immediately to fill it as soon as possible”, he said.
One of them could be at Miami.
Head coach Mark Richt and starting quarterback Hutson Mason in 2013.
If I’ve read it once I’ve read it a thousand times, “But Mark Richt is such a good guy”.
Maryland has been rumored to have interest in just about every major coach available, but the man that makes the most sense for the Terps is Mark Richt, who was let go by the University of Georgia on Sunday.
“On behalf of the University of Georgia Athletic Association and Bulldogs everywhere, I want to thank Mark and Katharyn for 15 years of remarkable service to the UGA community, hundreds of our students and staff, and to college football”, McGarity continued.
“I always wanted to be a head coach”.
Now, his future as Georgia’s coach will include only one game.
Athletics Director Blake James has repeatedly refused to address the coaching search.
Whether at USC or somewhere else, Richt still has a place in the coaching profession.
Virginia Tech has hired Memphis’ Justin Fuente to be its next football coach.
Richt scheduled a meeting with his players Sunday night and did not hold his normal Sunday teleconference with reporters. Richt (145-51) is the second-winningest coach in Georgia football history, after Vince Dooley, and the first in winning percentage (.738).
If Richt does become a coach again, he said it very well could be as a head coach, offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach. I feel it got to the point where there wasn’t enough confidence in my leadership to get it done. It was clear following the game Richt had no plans to step down. Maybe not as dignified coming off a win against their instate rival…
McGarity said the $4.1 buyout in Richt’s contract will be honored, even though the new version of the deal recently approved by the athletic board has not been signed.
Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen also could be candidates, according to ESPN. “A handshake means something around here”, McGarity said.
“That’s the standard here”, Richt said. Richt was able to lead the team to 6 top ten finishes from 2001 until 2008 along with two SEC championships.
Heck, he might decide he wants to be the offensive coordinator at Prince Avenue, a local Christian school and his children’s alma mater. He began his career as a graduate assistant (1985-88).
“I’ll say this: if and when I do coach again, I’m looking forward to coaching again, in terms of being more hands on. I miss calling plays”, he said. “I feel that more than ever right now”. “That’s kind of how I see it”. While the last few years haven’t been great, and this season is the same, with the losses to Alabama constantly piling up, the heads at Baton Rouge came to a conclusion that it’s not about their head coach, or at least replacing him isn’t going to get them closer to upsetting the kings of the SEC West.
