Watt, Texans take down Brees, Saints
They can deploy Breaux, hope for the best and use the rest of the defense to match up against the rest of the guys.
Shadowing his receivers to block Drew Brees’ usually clear sightlines and passing lanes while relentlessly crashing into him in the pocket, the Texans’ defense inflicted plenty of pain on the typically indomitable New Orleans Saints star quarterback.
And while you can make jokes about the AFC South (it’s easy, trust us), the Texans are playing well enough to be legitimate playoff contenders regardless of address.
“It starts with watching the tape and figuring out what went wrong and where the issues were, and it continues tomorrow with guys doing the right things”, Strief said. “Just had a bad taste in or mouth from a couple of those games and just internally promised each other it wouldn’t happen again”. Brees, who passed for 228 yards, had his individual streak of games with a touchdown pass snapped at 45.
Brees has thrown for 20 touchdown passes and nine interceptions this year, but the Saints’ porous defense has been their Achilles’ heel.
“That’s a long time”, Watt said.
“It’s a neat experience”, Watt said. “We ran the ball well today and Brian (Hoyer) had a great day throwing the ball, special teams played well and everybody played well”. Jackson proved integral in helping keep the Saints out of the end zone for the first time in 156 games, recording four tackles along with his interception at the goal line as the Saints threatened in the fourth quarter.
The last time the Saints did not score an offensive touchdown in a game was the forgettable season opener on September 6, 2007 when the Saints lost 41-10 to the Colts at Indianapolis.
CHARGERS 31, JAGUARS 25 Philip Rivers threw four touchdown passes, two to Antonio Gates, and the visiting Chargers (3-8) ended a six-game losing streak. The drive went 11 plays and covered 70 yard, while taking 6:06. Blue came away with the only rushing touchdown in the game and finished with 16 carries for 77 yards.
Houston padded the lead in the second quarter when Hoyer hit Cecil Shorts from 3yards out, making the score 14-0 after Novak kicked the extra point.
The Saints actually did manage to intercept Hoyer once, which helped illustrate how bad their pass defense has been. It was the fifth-longest streak in National Football League history. As for Cincinnati, well I think the Texans game against them should speak for itself.
Griffin knocked down the pylon on his way out of bounds on his touchdown on the first drive and the play was reviewed but upheld because the ball crossed the goal line. “But I think also the situations lent themselves to allowing him the opportunity to get after us”.
Brian Hoyer completed 21 of his 27 pass attempts for 205 yards and a touchdown.
“I’m not going to say anything to Drew Brees”, Watt said. “It was fast, and I thought the preparation during the week, I was pleased with”.
CAREER DAY: Since the Saints couldn’t get in the end zone on Sunday, they relied on Kai Forbath for their only points.
