Apple will reportedly ditch 3.5mm headphone jack in iPhone 7
Apple will bundle the iPhone 7 with EarPods that have Lightning connectors – a spec that third-party headphone makers will have to match, according to the report.
Citing a reliable industry source, Japanese technology blog Macotakara claims Apple will ship its next iPhone with a pair of redesigned Lightning port-equipped EarPods.
Apple is reportedly planning to replace traditional 3.5mm jack in the next-gen iPhones, which will make them 1mm thinner compared to current iPhones. Which means the so-called “iPhone 7” could be compared to the sixth-generation iPod touch that has a depth of 6.1mm. We have heard rumors about iPhone 7 that Apple is about to ditch the headphone jack permanently.
Previously, Apple thought of switching to the thinner but less popular 2.5mm port but acceptance is lukewarm especially after users complained about the recessed 3.5mm port. Thus, Apple chose to wait until a better option for earphones connection came about.
Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 7 is likely to launch sometime late next year, but there are already numerous rumors circulating about the changes the company could bring with its upcoming flagship smartphone.
So how do you connect your headphones to your iPhone 7? But of course, the difference will only be felt if and only if you have Lightning compatible headphones with you. By ditching the headphone jack, the iPhone 7 will be at least one whole millimetre thinner.
Using the Lightning port for audio would allow the company to slim down the phone, but at a cost.
Apple could be preparing to remove the headphone port on its next iPhone, if internet rumours are to be believed. They can also settle for Bluetooth enabled headphones or connectors that can do the trick. This move helped revolutionize the popularity of the USB, which is now regarded as the standard data storage device.
According to the reports, the company will unveil new MacBook Air series at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2016.
