Donald Trump attacks New York Times for criticizing his mockery of reporter
During a speech Tuesday in SC, business tycoon and presidential hopeful Donald Trump did an impression of a disabled New York Times reporter that many are calling highly offensive.
Kovaleski said he doubted Trump’s claims, particularly as the reporter often covered the businessman while reporting for the New York Daily News between 1987 and 1993. “Despite having one of the all-time great memories I certainly do not remember him”, the candidate added.
Trump then denied knowing about Kovaleski’s condition and suggested he might not have ever met the reporter. “If I did know, I would definitely not say anything about his appearance”, he said.
“Donald and I were on a first-name basis for years”, Kovaleski said.
“I’ve interviewed him in his office”, he said.
Challenged on the claim, he cited as evidence a story that Mr Kovaleski wrote 14 years ago while working as a reporter for the Washington Post.
Liar, liar, trousers on FIREEEE! Maybe that’s what I said, ‘ ” Trump said.
Jerking his arms in front of his body, Trump said: “Now the poor guy, you’ve got to see this guy”.
“I spent the entire day with Trump, along with some other reporters, on the inaugural voyage of the Trump Shuttle, which Trump bought from Eastern Airlines in the late 1980s”, Kovaleski told The News in an email on Friday.
“I think the New York Times frankly should give me an apology”, Trump responded on Saturday, after criticizing the business sense of the newspaper’s corporate leadership.
Trump accused Kovaleski of backing off a story from a week after the attacks that said authorities in New Jersey detained and questioned “a number of people who were allegedly seen celebrating the attacks”. “He’s going like, I don’t remember”.
The whole incident stemmed from comments Trump made about seeing “thousands” of Muslims celebrating the 9/11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. Uhh I don’t remember.
However, the allegations were never corroborated, and Kovaleski recently told CNN he did not recall “anyone saying there were thousands, or even hundreds, of people celebrating”.
“It is unacceptable for a child to mock another child’s disability on the playground, never mind a presidential candidate mocking someone’s disability as part of a national political discourse”, he said.
Trump replied on his Twitter page, writing: “The failing @nytimes should be focused on good reporting and the papers financial survival and not with constant hits on Donald Trump!”. He has ridiculed Kelly and her show.
