Republicans reject Obama’s plans to resettle Syrian refugees
Calling this a “moment where it’s better to be safe than to be sorry”, Speaker Ryan says there should be a “pause” in Syrian refugees coming to the U.S.in the wake of the Paris attacks, and has assembled a task force to bring legislation to a vote as soon as this week.
Officials also reaffirmed that even as the United States accepts more refugees, including Syrians, they undergo a rigorous screening and security vetting process.
A political firestorm is raging in this country over the acceptance of Syrian refugees in the USA after one of the terrorists who carried out last Friday’s attacks in Paris was found to carry a Syrian passport.
Obama’s sharp words, delivered during his stop at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit here, underscored the enormous chasm between the president’s approach to upheaval in the Mideast and those of Republicans, some of whom are seeking their party’s presidential nomination next year. The governors of MI and Alabama said Sunday that they would similarly prevent such resettlement in their states.
“After full consideration of this weekend’s attacks of terror on innocent citizens in Paris, I will oppose any attempt to relocate Syrian refugees to Alabama”, said Robert Bentley, governor of the southern U.S. state.
Refugees cleared by the State Department are assigned to one of nine national refugee resettlement organizations that place individuals in communities across the country, where local case managers help them resettle.
We hope Gov. Haley will return to her previous policy of openly welcoming the world’s victims of hate, violence and intolerance to SC.
Snyder, for example, condemned Republicans who suggested that only Christian Syrians be allowed into the United States.
“Apparently, they are scared of widows and orphans coming into the United States of America”, the president said.
“We intend to take a bill to the floor on Thursday to have a pause in this refugee program”, Ryan said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal during a public event at a Washington hotel.
But the pressure to keep Syrian refugees out of SC has been fierce and constant.
More than 2,000 Syrian refugees have been admitted to the USA already since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011. The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration sent letters Tuesday to Exodus Refugee Immigration Inc.in Indianapolis and Catholic Charities Indianapolis saying plans to accept two Syrian families should be halted.
The change “would provide no meaningful additional security for the American people, instead serving only to create significant delays and obstacles in the fulfillment of a vital program that satisfies both humanitarian and national security objectives”, the White House said.
