Murray brings back the Davis Cup to Britain
“With us normally travelling all over the world, they don’t always get the chance to be there to watch us play, so it was special day”.
“Playing in an atmosphere like that – it was so loud, there was a lot of booing and whistling – mentally it is good to go through matches like that and I hope I can use it to my advantage in the future”, he added.
“We have to enjoy this because we may never get the opportunity again, but the Australian Open is next”, he continued. “We should celebrate tonight”.
Of the 12 rubbers Britain won en route to their first Davis Cup title for 79 years, a run that included wins over the heavyweights the United States, France and Australia, Murray featured in all but one of them. The Murray brothers played with perfection, outmatching their Belgian counterparts 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The two-time Grand Slam champion claimed a regulation straight-set win in very irregular circumstances, completing a Herculean year-long effort.
At that stage Britain were ranked 43rd having just lost to Lithuania and faced a play-off with Turkey to avoid being relegated to the bottom tier of the competition. “Nothing may ever top this, it’s definitely one of the highlights of all of our careers”.
In his quest to lead Great Britain to Davis Cup victory, Murray finished the year unbeaten in 11 Davis Cup rubbers.
Fittingly for a player who has almost single-handedly guided his nation to the title this year, the indefatigable Murray ended Goffin’s inspired resistance with a moment of sheer brilliance few could conjure to complete a 6-3 7-5 6-3 victory.
“It has to be one of the best [British sporting] achievements of all-time”, said Great Britain captain Leon Smith of Murray’s performance.
Now it’s not as if anyone expected either Bemelmans or their second-best player Steve Darcis to win that match, but the veteran Darcis can play an attacking game at net and force Murray into a different retrieval game.
The first match of the finals was played between David Goffin and Kyle Edmunds.

After Murray won the match, he dropped down on his back with his teammates all over him. That left it to Andy Murray to complete his stunning year in the competition by beating Goffin to clinch the trophy.
After looking all but out of the point when Goffin unleashed a forehand down the line, with the Belgian player headed to the net to deliver what could have been a killing blow, Murray scampers to his backhand corner and lifts the ball over Goffin’s head and inside the lines for an inch-perfect lob victor.
The first excitement came in the second game, a break point faced and resisted by Goffin. Murray broke and surged into a 5-2 lead. “I gave it all I had, I have no regrets”.
Andy Murray made it a couple of days to remember as he backed up his team’s historic Davis Cup victory with a nomination for the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year 2015. “We gave everything but he was better, especially at the big points”.
