Obama, Hollande meet to discuss fight against IS
Publicly, though, Obama outlined no concrete new actions that the United States would take, and he suggested that the attacks might finally prompt Europe to approach the threat more seriously.
“We have to let the Vienna process play itself out”, Obama said, referring to an agreement among 17 countries that lays out a timeline for a political transition in Syria. He is due to visit Moscow on Thursday.
Saying he expected to speak with Turkish President Erdoğan in the coming days to discuss the incident, Obama urged Russian Federation and Turkey to communicate about the details of the operation in order to decrease the chance of escalation.
The United States is also trying to ease tensions between Russia and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies after a Russian warplane was downed Tuesday along Turkey’s border with Syria.
During a press conference at the White House, President Barack Obama said: “And if Russian Federation is directing its energies towards Daesh and ISIL, some of those conflicts, or potentials for mistakes or escalation, are less likely to occur”.
The United States has taken only incremental military action in recent months, sending in a small team of special forces in an advisory role and beefing up aid to Kurdish and Arab militias on the ground.
“France isn’t looking for more than the U.S. can accept and welcome, which is more Russian strikes against Islamic State and less Russian strikes against rebels”, de Gilbert said. The White House said the president was told there is now no specific, credible threat to the US homeland from Islamic State.
Hollande reiterated that all concerned parties should focus on one objective, to fight against terrorism and the ISIS.
“If Russia is prepared to change their strategy and prepared to focus their efforts on ISIL and to work with the worldwide community to do that, then we would welcome them as members of our coalition”, he said.
On Tuesday, the commander in chief sought to reassure Americans wary that the Paris attacks, which killed more than 120 people, could presage an attempt by ISIS to strike US soil.
“We decided, President Obama and myself, to scale up our strikes both in Syria and Iraq to broaden their scope, to strengthen our intelligence sharing regarding the targets we might aim at”, Hollande said.
Mr Hollande has been seeking global support for his newly declared war on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) after the Paris attacks.
A USA official said that Russia’s apparent lack of regard for civilian casualties was one of the reasons the United States has been reluctant to partner with Moscow.
Last week, Hollande called for the US and Russian Federation to set aside their policy divisions over Syria and “fight this terrorist army in a broad, single coalition”. What the Presidents won’t do is intervene with more military forces.
Russian Federation is supporting Assad’s government.
“This was an attack on our free and open societies, where people come together to celebrate and sing and compete”, he said.
Colonel Steve Warren, a Baghdad-based spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition, said the USA military believes private estimates from non-governmental groups of the civilian death toll were probably “fairly accurate”.
