Wake Forest upsets No. 13 IN in Hawaii
“We were fortunate enough to score”.
“We’re six games in, OK”, Crean said.
It got all kinds of hectic in the end, when the Rebels became a little tight and their lead began to shrink and those game-clinching free throws began to clank off rim.
After UNLV’s lead extended to as many as 15 points, the Hoosiers responded with a 12-0 run to get within 27-24 with five minutes left in the half.
Hoosiers coach Tom Crean knows the history and is not panicking in the wake of his team’s 1-2 trip to Hawaii.
Day two of the Maui Invitational is now in the books.
“I thought our guys came out with a lot of intensity and goal at the beginning of the game”.
The lead got as high as 48-15 with 3:39 to play in the first half, and the Commodores led 53-24 at the break.
The 13th ranked team in the country does have a major weakness though and it’s at the defensive end of the floor.
Speaking to the same issue, Crean said the Hoosiers were “trying to make plays that weren’t there”. They made baskets. But it’s not going to be when you’re playing against other competitive teams when you’re in this environment. The duo combined for 39 points and 16 rebounds on 18-of-30 shooting from the field. The Demon Deacons had three of the offensive rebounds in the final 2:32. “We’re going to play against the best because we want to be the best”. “It’s unacceptable with the guys that have the ball in their hands for us to be giving the ball that way, and we’ve got to get that fixed”. Tony Parker was limited to 6 minutes in the first half after picking up his third personal foul.
While Wake Forest was without Crawford and CMM, this game did mark the return of sophomores Cornelius Hudson and Rondale Watson. Williams made both free throws and IN was given possession of the ball….
He made the biggest shot of the game, however, a driving layup that dropped through with 3.2 seconds to play, breaking a tie in an 82-78 win over Indiana, No. 13 in The Associated Press poll, on Monday at the Lahaina Civic Center.
And though that may prove to be true, the history books are filled with Final Four teams that, at some point, looked nothing like the part.
Vanderbilt didn’t get a chance to play a top 25 team in the semifinals of the 2015 Maui Invitational, but they still found a way to make a statement.
It might take some more balance to knock off the Jayhawks, but you can be certain UCLA will give the No. 5 team in the nation a run for its money. Freshman center Thomas Bryant does a nice job of meeting Crawford at the point of attack. Barber scored six of his points in overtime when the Wolfpack outscored the Tigers (3-2) by an 18-7 margin.
The Hoosiers had what was thought to be a favorable matchup against Wake Forest, but that didn’t turn out so well as they dropped a tough battle to the Demon Deacons. Stephen Zimmerman Jr., the highly touted 7-footer for UNLV, did not play in Tuesday’s win against Chaminade because of flu-like symptoms, and his absence against in would create a huge advantage for 6-10 Thomas Bryant, who toasted St. John’s for 19 points in an 83-73 win Tuesday.
