Adele Says Hello to Greatest Single Sales Week in Music History
Adele has smashed yet another record with “25”, becoming the first person to sell more than three million copies of an album in its first week in the US.
Usher’s 2004 album Confessions sold more than a million copies in its debut week.
The majority of the top 10 in the Billboard 200 are familiar records.
Meanwhile, Adele’s first album, 19, is back in the top 20, thanks to a 252% increase in sales this past week.
Selling 26 million copies of her second album, “21” worldwide.
1 million: The single, Hello, became the first track to sell more than 1 million downloads in a week.
“The statistics surrounding the album are staggering, topped by the simple fact that no album has ever sold 800,000 copies to reach Number One in the history of British music”.
The British star’s release set a record for the largest single sales week for an album since Nielsen began methodically tracking weekly music sales in 1991, the company said. CBS News reported on Beyoncé’s victory at the end of 2013.
Adele’s success may be due to a combination of factors: her vocal prowess shows her genuine talent, her songs have a retro mood that gives them a wide appeal, and her album not appearing on streaming services means consumers have fewer places where they can find it. Just how successful was it?
The tweet of Friday read: “A 27-year old mom who just uses social media is selling more records than anyone believed was still potential”. The current album follows the Grammy winning chart-topper 21.
The next album to debut in the top 10 is Jadakiss’ first studio installment in more than six years, “Top 5 Dead or Alive”, which opens at No. 4 with 66,000 units.
There is simply no comparison to be made between Adele and other contemporary music, said David Bakula, senior vice president of industry insights at Nielsen Entertainment. NME has the news.
