Mark Richt: Former Georgia coach open to coaching again
Asked what he thinks will happen next, Richt said: “I’m going to listen to anyone who has interest in me, coaching or not, really in any area or any arena”.
I would be surprised to see Richt jump right back in coaching this year and with this team.
Glowing compliments for Richt came from UGA president Jere Morehead and athletic director Greg McGarity. He took Georgia to a bowl in each of his 15 seasons at the helm and will remain on staff to coach the school in its upcoming bowl. Like I said, whoever goes there, it’s not going to hurt how I look at Georgia.
“I think decisions of this nature are very hard”, McGarity said.
“The expectations have been built to the point where, if you don’t win a championship, it’s kind of miserable around here”, Richt said.
In 2015, Georgia entered the season at No. 9 in the nation, but suffered losses to Alabama, Tennessee and Florida, and failed to beat a ranked opponent.
Savannah Christian Head Football Coach Donald Chumley is a former UGA player under legendary Head Coach Vince Dooley, and he realizes, it’s a rough business.
Mark Richt seems optimistic about Jacob Eason sticking with Georgia, as Eason’s father Tony, a former wideout for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, said previously that unless Georgia’s offense resembles something like the triple option Georgia Tech runs, then his son will enroll at the University of Georgia in January.

Richt had only a short statement in the announcement released by Georgia. They won two conference championships and six division crowns, but they’ve been held out of the SEC Championship Game for the last three years. “I miss coaching quarterbacks”. Georgia won its first SEC championship in 20 years when Richt did it in his second year in 2002.
Speculations have emerged on the possibility that Kirby Smart, defensive coordinator of Alabama, may come in, but Georgia does not offer enough to attract now successful head coaches.
I hear that you are serving our country in Iraq and I appreciate the fact that you are laying your life on the line for this country and all of its freedoms.
“If and when I do coach again, I’m looking forward to being more hands-on”, Richt said.
That ultimately led to Richt’s ouster. Our sport is a very passionate sport and a very public sport, and you can’t have all the excitement and the cheering without the other. “There are jobs that we do and everybody has an opinion on it. If things don’t go the way people want them to go, I understand people being disappointed and thinking there’s a better way and I respect that”. One even went so far as to say he would be interviewing there.
