Meijer store evacuated after ISIS comment
Shoppers were evacuated from a Sterling Heights Meijer, Monday night, after rumors spread that a customer made an ISIS related threat to a clerk.
“As they’re walking out of the store, they started talking about world events going on and ISIS”, Sterling Heights police Lt. David Smith told the Macomb Daily.
Police say the terror group came up during a conversation an employee was having with a customer on Monday. Both then left Meijer. The clerk put the backpack in lost and found, saying there was nothing inside.
After returning home, the first employee posted comments on Facebook about her conversation with the customer, prompting others to encourage her to contact a store manager to report the experience.
“She thought she should bring it to someone’s attention, so she called the manager to tell him”, Smith said.
Police and federal law enforcement officers were called; the store was evacuated.
“It was a big nothing and it was fairly innocent”, Smith said.
The store reopened at around 8:30 p.m.
