Little girl fighting cancer ‘marries’ her favorite nurse
A hospital in New York helped make a young cancer patient’s dream come true.
On the “Amazing Abby” Facebook page, Abby’s mother wrote that she had told Matt of Abby’s wish, and she received a text back soon after from the nurse saying, “We’re planning a wedding tomo…” Abby, who is battling pre-B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, got hitched at the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancers at Albany Medical Center in New York.
Hickling is the nurse who has cared for Abby in the past year and it was during those times that a special bond developed between them. Vows were exchanged and there was much stuffing of cake in mouths (Abby’s favorite part) and punch. She said that it was “the best day ever!”
Local businesses donated flowers and a cake for the happy couple, who had roses thrown at their feet in the cancer clinic ceremony this week. Receiving treatment at Albany medical center for a year now.
The lovely bride had a pretty white dress on and a white headband, like the ones she loves to wear every day.
She told her mother that she will be marrying Matt. Then the staff and her parents sprung into action with all the details needed.
Abby and her mother were delighted and felt blessed to have such people in their lives. Abby’s mom said the friendships the nurses and doctors have built with Abby have made her more willing to come to the hospital. “I know I will!” says Matt Hickling in his Facebook page.
