Black Pastors Endorse Donald Trump After All
The crowd seemed to love the idea, too, loudly cheering – although not almost as loud as they cheered when Trump said “dumbass politicians” only worry about being re-elected.
In the end, Trump left things on an “I don’t know” for whether he will take the chance.
“What Donald Trump is representing right now, the insults, the degrading, is not what we’re all about”.
Somehow, Trump still pulled off a meeting (at Trump Tower, natch) with several African-American pastors on Monday.
While Cruz is looking to pull off a February 1 win Iowa, the first caucus state, Trump’s appearance in Georgia foreshadows the outsider’s longer-term strategy. “The fact is, people can say whatever they like”.
He said the preachers who met with Trump “have not been on the front lines of social justice”.
Trump’s campaign canceled a news conference slated for after the meeting.
Detroit bishop and TV personality Corletta Vaughn was featured in a campaign flyer advertising the Trump meeting last week, but said she declined the invitation because Trump is “flaunting a ticket of unbridled bigotry, sexism, racism and everything that is wrong with America”.
Numerous religious leaders invited to the meet-and-greet with Trump were surprised that the gathering was being advertised by his Republican presidential campaign as an endorsement. He listed the names of pastors expected to attend the meeting, and cited Trump’s statements negatively portraying Black Lives Matter activists, Hispanics and refugees as evidence that Trump does not have minorities’ interests at heart. After the meeting, though, no such endorsement had taken place – with the pastors saying they had yet to decide which candidate to support. Trump said he didn’t know what Kovaleski looked like, but Kovaleski said he has interviewed Trump in his office.
As for his continued perch at the top of the Republican presidential field, Trump seemed resigned to the coming fights with candidates like Cruz, as well as bit gleeful at the discomfort he was causing the party’s insiders.
“Nobody at this meeting came out with negative reaction in any kind of way”, Scott said, adding that “Everybody in the room likes Donald Trump”.
“I don’t want to discuss that”. “Black lives are very important”. He received many, many endorsements from the pastors that were there.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Donald Trump has overpromised and underdelivered.
