Ben Carson: Refugees would rather be in Syria than US
What do you think about Dr. Ben Carson’s views?
Jeff Colyer accompanied presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson as he visited Syrian refugees at the Azraq and Za’atari refugee camps along the Jordan/Syrian border.
“Hello friends. We’re here in Jordan today, you can see behind me the refugee camp”, he said.
He also expressed his belief that the United States could, and should, do more to help those who are on the front lines of this humanitarian disaster.
“I want to get a really good impression of what’s going on over there with these refugees”.
“They want to go back to their lives”.
In an interview on CNN after his visit, he added that refugee camps are “really quite nice”. “You’ve got these refugee camps that aren’t completely full”. And it was pretty uniform. And that’s not what they want. “So, maybe they can teach us a little bit about how to interpret language”.
Carson said that it was up to the worldwide community to provide better support and encouragement to Arab countries hosting the refugees, though he stressed to the AP that US aid should be raised by Americans themselves, rather than through increased government spending. “That’s the amount of money that was needed to bridge the shortfall for a year that they’re having in Jordan with the refugees”.
“What we have to do is look at what has worked”, said Carson, as he specifically pointed to the effectiveness of U.S. Special Operations forces working with the Kurds in Iraq in conjunction with air strikes.
“I always oppose doing unnecessary things, particularly risky and costly unnecessary things”, he said.
According to figures compiled by the Jordanian government, more than 1.3 million Syrians – 20 percent of the country’s population – have taken refuge in Jordan. And all you need is the resources to be able to run them. “And we need to be looking at mechanisms that already exist”.
“If it’s someone that you know nothing about – they’re presenting you documents that may or may not truly be them, there’s no database to compare them off of, that’s a different story and that’s the point that I’ve made”.
But Carson, one of the leaders in the polls in the contest for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, offered few details on how he would work to defeat Islamic State militants and stabilize Syria to enable the refugees’ return. It’s about these individuals and what’s happening to them and it’s also about the United States of America and the people of our country and the leadership that these people deserve. So, you don’t know whether or not you would rules of engagement – Those of us who are not experts in that area can sit around all day long talking about, oh, we should do this and we should do that.
