Gary Neville: What Manchester United need to win the league
Manchester United have already spent in excess of 300 million pounds in assembling their present squad and the big question on the minds of the fans is whether splurging cash on big signings is the answer to the Red Devils woes.
Former United defender Neville believes the Red Devils are close to turning a corner but lack a match-winner in their starting XI.
In the Daily Mail, there’s a story that Gary Neville says that Manchester United should buy Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo to make the team they have something special.
United have scored just 20 goals in 14 games this season – the lowest of the top five teams in the division – but routinely dominate possession and Neville insists that his former club need at least one marquee attacking player if they are to win their first title since 2013.
‘Even in the last 15 minutes (against Leicester at the weekend), they didn’t fully commit to winning the game. “Because the structure that is being built at this moment in time is solid”, Neville told Sky Sports.
‘But that’s not the way in which this Manchester United team play, and the heart wants them to go forward, commit players and be reckless in some ways’.
“But he’s a year-and-a-half in, Louis van Gaal, and he should get a lot more time to do what he wants to do”.
Neville emphasized on the need to find a goal scoring talisman to take advantage of United’s possession play.
It is hard to know whether the suggestion that Mrs Ronaldo is driving her beloved boy back to Manchester is accurate, but it seems increasingly evident that a battle is likely to ensue between United and PSG for the reigning World Footballer of the Year next summer.
That, perhaps, is true and United have been missing that one player to change the game since Ronaldo’s £86million departure to Real Madrid.
