No. 11 North Carolina closes regular season at NC State
Paige has missed the Tar Heels’ first six games this season due to a fracture in his right hand, an injury he suffered in practice on November 3rd. UNC seniors like Schoettmer and Williams were around in 2011 when Butch Davis got canned as their head coach. Against the Tar Heels, though, that will have to change if they wish to remain undefeated and Melo Trimble is at the heart of that.
They earned their first 8-0 mark in ACC play. “Our goal now will be to be ACC Champions”.
More recently, it marked the first time UNC has swept the rest of the “Big Four” – North Carolina-based ACC teams Duke, N.C. State and Wake Forest – in the same season since 2004.
“They were talking some crap to us before the game, and we wanted to make a statement that we’re not the same team we were past year”.
Williams called Paige “one of the greatest leaders I’ve ever been around”, and Paige has had to be to keep the program moving forward during a period when recruiting has been, certainly by Tar Heels standards, a struggle. While the Tiger’s Wayne Gallman has been impressive, his 5.4 yards per carry is shattered by Hood’s 6.7, and his touchdown total of 9 again comes up short.
North Carolina has been rolling over teams with explosive pass plays, but the running game was at the forefront this week. Joel Berry II appeared most suited to run the point and take over prime playmaking duties, with Nate Britt seeming to fit off the ball and provide auxiliary shooting from the out side. The North Carolina Tar Heels are a familiar foe for the Terps, but this time around, the two teams are no longer conference foes. As for the Pack, all we can do is await an invitation to go bowling this holiday season.
The 11th-ranked Tar Heels finished the regular season with 11 straight wins, the most in school history.
North Carolina posted 35 points in the first quarter behind the playmaking of senior quarterback Marquise Williams, a 6-foot-2, 225-pounder. Logan’s 40-yard run pushed the edge to 28-7. I know they have made mistakes. This is the best football team we have faced – they’re the No. 1 team in the country. Like future national championship game big – well, in a dream scenario, that is.
North Carolina’s offense may be able to match Clemson point-for-point, but there’s more pressure on Clemson to perform because of what’s at stake.
It has been almost 25 years since Williams and Turgeon last worked together in 1992 but they remain close.
And while the offense ranks among the nation’s best, none of that would have been possible without the resurrection of a defense that was historically very bad only a year earlier.
