The Flash 2.8 “Legends Of Today”
Vandal Savage (Casper Crump), an immortal, knife-wielding assassin, shows up in Central City hot on the trail of Cisco’s (Carlos Valdes) new girlfriend Kendra Saunders (Ciara Renée).
“At first, Oliver, Barry and Carter don’t get along because they think he’s a risky person who wants to harm Kendra”. Realizing how risky Vandal is, Barry moves Kendra to Star City and asks Oliver for help. The crossover event also features Hawkman a.k.a. Carter Hall (Falk Hentschel) and Hawkgirl a.k.a. Kendra Saunders (Ciara Renee). Basically, Barry needs to run a lot faster than he is now, so Harry and Caitlin work up a serum that will allow him to do that. Are we supposed to assume that he got his grubby mitts on that bomb after Flash rescued Green Arrow?
What Teams Arrow and Flash are unaware of when they meet Vandal Savage is that they’re not going to defeat him in this two-parter since he has to go on to be the villain for Legends of Tomorrow. But the scarlet speedster has other worries to chase when he receives a distress call from Cisco, who should be in the middle of a romantic evening with Kendra. The synopsis also says that Jay will be testing out the serum first. He’s hunting someone, but we’re not sure who just yet. “You’re 0-206 and you still think you’re her best bet?” But in this case, it adds important elements that will pay off in future, non-crossover Arrow episodes.
Those plans are spoiled, however, by Vandal Savage, who ruins the wonderful homecooked meal Kendra made for them at CC Jitters.
The CW network continues with Season 2 of The Flash and Season 4 of Arrow. Jay uses his regained speed to phase through Wells’ body to retrieve the bullet.
The time-travel element, moreover, can become dramatically frustrating – not just because of the whole butterfly effect issue, but the simple matter that when characters can go back and alter events, it lowers the dramatic stakes while you’re seeing them unfold.
In addition to kick-starting Legends, part one of the crossover also dropped some huge revelations for both The Flash and Arrow’s individual storylines. But at least we got to see Jay briefly reclaim his speed powers and save his rival from certain death. “Legends is its own wacky, insane kind of thing that allows for some fun surprises, in terms of who may visit and how because they’re flying through the timeline, but not on Arrow or Flash“. “This time around, given the success that we’ve had previously, and how people are viewing this as much more of a collective, shared universe, we felt emboldened, and our partners at CW and Warner Bros. were more supportive”. And hey, I quite liked everything involved with this narrative path, from the set up to the pay off. As well, it’s always nice to see members of Team Arrow and Team Flash mixing it up.
“If you’re a fan of the comics, you know that a big part of the comics is Velocity 9”, which was developed by Savage in canon, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg says.
The two-part crossover event will air on December 1 and 2, both at 8 p.m. on The CW. The real grade for “Legends Of Today” should probably be “incomplete” with so much left unresolved until the second part airs on Arrow, but even without a real ending, this was the most purely enjoyable outing of the season so far. She’s a good detective, and there’s no way she’s going to take this incident lying down.
