If the contract details are correct, it will be the largest deal in history for pitcher, surpassing the seven-year, $210 million deal Max Scherzer received from the Washington Nationals last winter.
A few weeks ago, the Boston Red Sox had expressed interest in signing Chris Young and putting him in their outfield after watching him as a member of the New York Yankees in 2015 while watching him destroy the outfield wall at Fenway Park.
Young’s spot on the Red Sox roster should include a platoon in the outfield with Jackie Bradley Jr.
After hitting. 282 with three home runs, 10 RBI and eight doubles in 23 games, Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman re-signed Young last offseason to a one-year, $7.5 million deal. He was 13-8 with a 2.90 ERA in 32 starts as a Tiger.
David Price, the prize of this year’s free-agent class, agreed to a contract with Boston that gives him the chance to set a financial record for starting pitchers or, if he chooses, go through the process again for another jackpot in three years.
