Apple may drop the 3.5mm headphone jack in its next iPhone
Or, simply they would make wired-headphones with Lightning connectors. After Apple introduced audio-over-Lightning support in iOS 7, some companies began selling headsets offering “high resolution audio” when connected via that port. Despite the rumor, the iPod touch 1mm thickness is compared to iPhone 7 because it still has the 3.5mm jack.
Although the latest iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are bound to be popular gifts this holiday season, that hasn’t stopped the Internet from speculating on what will be in Apple’s next iPhone.
In order to make the next iPhone even slimmer than previous models, Apple is supposedly getting rid of the 3.5mm headphone jack. The current iPhone 6s is not much wider than the size of the 3.55m slot, which is a standard port and so can not be re-sized.
Using the Lightning port for audio would allow the company to slim down the phone, but at a cost. This move may have been part of a transition into the new Lighting-based technology – and away from headphone jacks.
“Reliable sources” told Mac Otakara that the iPhone 7 headphones will only be able to connect over Lightning or Bluetooth.
In other Apple news, Taiwanese publication Economic Daily News claimed that Apple will launch a new redesigned an all-new MacBook Air next year.
However, abolishing the circular headphone port could help shave an extra 1mm off the body – according to the rumours.
Apple would have to offer some kind of 3.5mm-to-Lightning adapter as well, given that the majority of consumers own conventional non-Lightning headphones. Apple is making a chance that all devices will be wireless very soon shortly, which will take out the need such a large number of ports on our gadgets. Users could also presumably buy a Lightning cable with a digital-to-analog converter and a female 3.5mm plug on the end, so they could use their standard headphones.
