Chicago police union stands by white cop charged with murder
The third day of protests were planned by such groups as the Chicago Teachers Union, Jesse Jackson’s Operation Push, some local communist and socialist party groups, and others in response to the 2014 shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. As WBEZ’s Chip Mitchell reported in the springtime, the judge in the Servin case “appeared to be saying the trial might have ended differently if prosecutors had charged the detective with murder”.
Clinton, who made the comments Wednesday in an emailed statement, added that police officers across the country are doing their duty honorably “without resorting to unnecessary force”.
But the public’s not buying it.
“Some people may do that, I don’t know”, Jackson said. Mostly the concerns are that the choice to hold off revealing the video was more about politics than it was about leaglese or the interest of the investigation.
The group held the rally in the Woodlawn neighborhood, he said, because “we think it’s important that people show up where these crimes are taking place”, although McDonald was killed in another district, near 41st Street and Pulaski Road. Reverend Marshall Hatch of the New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church said, “This is something that has touched the conscience of our entire city”.
The Chicago lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police posted a bail-fund appeal on its website for Officer Jason Van Dyke. For additional video content, click the “video” tab at the top of this page.
And there lies the real issue. Too many times has it witnessed her betrayal and so there is no trust in her effort to pursue justice where Blacks are concerned. The killer cop, Jason Van Dyke, was shielded by Mayor Emanuel and Superintendent of Police Garry McCarthy, for 13 months.
The spread of similar videos has sparked large-scale protests in some cities. He stepped away, and wiped tears from his eyes.
In September, the Chicago Tribune filed a lawsuit alleging that the mayor violated state open-records laws by refusing to release communications about city business conducted through private emails and text messages. Their memory will not wane. Van Dyke, who had been on administrative duty since the shooting last October, was charged with murder on Tuesday. “She waited until her hand was forced by intense political and media pressure surrounding the release of this painful video”. In the McDonald case, city lawyers preempted a lawsuit by agreeing to a $5 million settlement of all McDonald family claims arising from the case.
The protesters were questioning why there was no audio on the police dash cam video that captured the shooting and also raised concerns that Chicago Police deleted relevant security camera footage from a nearby restaurant.
Activists also want a special prosecutor assigned to the Van Dyke case.
Hundreds of African-American protesters took to the streets of Chicago Wednesday, in the USA state of IL overnight after police released a video that showed a white officer unload his gun into a teen. I just don’t like the fact that my phone number is being accessed.
Laquan McDonald never had a chance to do much of anything.
Alvarez said the reason it took so long is because investigations into police shootings and misconduct are “massive and labor intensive” and can take up to 20 months.
“This is what they need to do: Clear the air, make it clean”.
Though this may be true, some action could have been taken.
But Trotter backs the FOP’s decision to stand behind Van Dyke. An instant later, Van Dyke fired his first two shots at which point McDonald twisted and fell.
