No bond for suspect in deadly, Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooting
Dear will appear before a judge at the El Paso County Jail and the hearing starts at 1:30 pm (2030 GMT).
From the courthouse, the judge advised Dear that he is facing a charge of murder in the first degree and if convicted, will face a sentence ranging from life in prison to the death penalty.
Dear, 57, is accused of fatally shooting a university police officer who responded to the attack, as well as an Iraq war veteran and a mother of two inside the clinic.
But does that mean a return of the clinic in Colorado Springs?
Colorado Springs police on Sunday said they would not disclose any information on the motive for the attack.
For weeks earlier, NARAL had been collecting signatures on a petition calling on the FBI to investigate recent threats and arson attacks against Planned Parenthood as acts of domestic terrorism.
A law enforcement official said Dear told authorities “no more baby parts” after being arrested, part of a rambling statement that investigators are parsing to understand the reasoning.
Colorado Springs Shooting Suspect Robert Lewis Dear.
“What he did is domestic terrorism, and what he did is absolutely abominable – especially to us in the pro-life movement, because there’s nothing about any of us that would condone or in any way look the other way on something like this”, Huckabee said.
The police records from SC show that a woman living in the Charleston area told police that Dear, then a 34-year-old self-employed art salesman, approached her at her place of work in 1992 and repeatedly asked her out on dates despite her refusals.
Colorado Springs, which was blanketed by snow as the drama unfolded over several hours into the early evening Friday, is also ringed by three military bases and the US Air Force Academy.
Planned Parenthood has said witnesses believe the gunman was motivated by his opposition to abortion.
News reports the identities of Ke’Arre Stewart and Jennifer Markovsky were confirmed by their families Sunday.
As a leading defender of abortion rights and comprehensive sex education, Planned Parenthood deals daily with some of America’s most contentious issues, and is well accustomed to receiving verbal threats. Family members said Markovsky had accompanied a friend to the clinic.
Police officer Garrett Swasey was previously identified and honored in a candlelight vigil over the weekend.
Planned Parenthood performs abortions, among other services.
Investigators have not confirmed the killer’s motives, but the words “baby parts” were repeated for months by Republicans in Congress and in the White House race as they blasted Planned Parenthood, which stood accused of profiting from the sale of fetal tissue.
It’s an eerie coincidence that groups like NARAL say is evidence of more risky rhetoric against abortion providers in general. “That’s about all I’ve run into him”, he said.
“The staff at this health center were trained in security measures, and they acted swiftly and in accordance with their training”, Vicki Cowart, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, said in a statement.
