Modi arrives in Delhi from Paris climate summit
It aspires to bring together well over 100 solar-rich countries in the tropics, with backing from industry and governments and to mobilise a trillion dollars of investment.
Later, he delivered a speech on making COP21 a success by promising to make India a champion in the fight against climate change.
Modi called on the developed nations to fulfil their commitment in a credible, transparent and meaningful manner.
“It is not just a question of historical responsibility”.
“They (developed nations) should share resources and technology with those who live between want and hope, so that we can meet the universal aspiration for clean energy. We have got off to a good start, with almost 12 gigawatt likely to be installed by 2016, more than three times the current capacity”, he said.
Mr Hollande, meanwhile, described the alliance as “an avant-garde of countries that believe in renewable energies”.
Sharif was also quoted as saying that “doors of dialogue (with India) should open”. India is seeking to reach capacity of 100 gigawatts by 2022.
“We will collaborate on research and innovation”, said Modi. “That is natural climate justice”, Modi asserted. It will also mean that the developing world will also try to have a lighter carbon footprint on their growth path.
“The entire world, 196 nations, have come together to shape the future of this world and the health of our planet”, said Modi.
“Energy is a basic human need”.
“Solar technology is evolving, costs are coming down and grid connectivity is improving”, he said.
Modi highlighted that the presence of 196 countries gives a message that there is a chance to unite behind a common objective.
The Paris summit aims to forge an agreement to curb global warming by limiting the emission of greenhouse gases and the USA has accepted its responsibility to cut green gas emissions.
Mr. Modi began his address by saluting French President Francois Hollande and the French people for their courage and resolve in the aftermath of the horrific Paris attacks. So, I speak in admiration for your resilience and resolve.
The Paris Climate Conference will see 195 nations, thousands of activists, journalists, and climate change scholars converge at point to carve out a safer and sustainable future path for the world.
He noted that over next few days, nations will decide the fate of this planet.
Modi walked up to him, and the two leaders warmly shook hands and sat next to each other and briefly chatted.
India will support the alliance’s operations for five years, and will work with partners to raise long term funds to achieve its goals.
However, talks between Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his Pakistani counterpart Sartaz Aziz scheduled to be held in New Delhi in August this year were cancelled after the Pakistan high commission in India insisted on inviting Hurriyat leaders for a reception in honour of Aziz.
