Chicago Mayor Fires City Police Superintendent
In fact, there were so many protestors Friday that many stores were blocked and closed. In a protest on Monday, the president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Cornell William Brooks, was one of several protesters arrested, the organization said.
“You don’t compromise an ongoing investigation”, he said. “They’re two conflicting principles”.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has named an interim police chief until a permanent replacement is found for the superintendent, which he fired Tuesday. “And I try to do it every day do it in a professional way”.
Garry McCarthy resigned Tuesday morning as superintendent from the Chicago Police Department at the request of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
Through a spokesman, McCarthy declined to comment Tuesday to The Associated Press.
In June, McDonald family lawyers saw the dash-cam video for the first time and the city quickly offered a $5 million settlement – before the McDonalds had even filed a lawsuit.
In the days following the release of video showing McDonald’s fatal shooting, McCarthy maintained that Emanuel supported him and said “I’ve never quit anything in my life”.
Instead it shows the teen, reportedly with PCP in his system, holding a small knife but moving away from police when Van Dyke opens fire – and inexplicably keeps firing at McDonald’s flinching body on the ground. Why award the family money if there was nothing to hide and before they took actions to sue the city of Chicago?
Van Dyke then fired 16 rounds at McDonald in about 14 seconds and was reloading when another officer told him to hold his fire, prosecutors said at bond court.
Alderman Howard Brookins Jr., a member of the black caucus, said he appreciated Emanuel’s “willingness to change course”.
McCarthy is a former operations chief with the NYPD, who also formerly ran the Newark police department in New Jersey. Alvarez has faced criticism that it took her office 13 months to file the murder charges against Van Dyke. A district manager for the restaurant chain has said police visited shortly after the shooting and were given access to the surveillance equipment.
In New York, McCarthy rose from patrolman to an executive position and was involved in rescue and recovery efforts after the September 11 terrorist attacks before taking the job in New Jersey.
In the audio-free video, McDonald can be seen walking down the middle of a four-lane street. Further examination has also revealed that, although McDonald carried a knife the day he was killed, “the three inch blade recovered from the scene had been folded into the handle”.
He walked out of jail on bond Monday evening after a judge set his bail at $1.5 million. Dashboard camera footage of Laquan McDonald’s killing was not released until last week after a judge ordered it be made public. The city went to court to prevent its release. He is dead, shot 16 times point blank by a Chicago police officer. The history of the Chicago police going back to before Al Capon’e s time is one of dirty, corrupt, and viscious cops whose methods have been called into question on numerous occassions.
