Former UGA coach Richt to meet with Maryland
“Coach Richt and I met Sunday morning to discuss the status of our football program”, said UGA Director of Athletics Greg McGarity in a news release.
InsideMDSports.com reported Monday that Maryland has spoken with former Georgia head coach Mark Richt about the head-coaching vacancy in College Park.
“I’ll say this – if and when I do coach again, I’m looking forward to coaching again in terms of being more hands-on”, said Richt.
Outgoing Georgia football coach Mark Richt has a short-term goal of guiding the Bulldogs to a bowl victory.
Richt is 145-51 with two SEC championships.
At 55 years old, Richt still has a lot of time left as a football coach. “From that perspective, we fell in need of our objectives”.
It was clear how much coaching means to Richt, but then again, he might just take some time off to be with his wife, Katharyn, or turn his focus to faith-based initiatives. He also led Georgia to two conference titles. After such a prestigious career at Georgia, there is a chance that he is both ready for a jump to the next level as well as cautious about joining another school. His influence will be key to whoever the Terps hire as their next head coach.
“It’s kind of insane”, Richt said of the sudden attention he’s receiving as a free agent.
If Georgia truly wants to pay homage to the man, who will coach his final game in whatever bowl the Bulldogs land, it will name a field or a student-athlete academic center or the planned practice facility after him.
Georgia administrators earlier considered firing Mark Richt after last season after it loss to Florida along with a home loss to Georgia Tech.
Richt was offered an opportunity to join Georgia in an administrative capacity, but initial reports suggest he’s going to listen to the opportunities in this busy offeason for coaching changes.
Georgia held the most unusual of exit news conferences Monday. Richt says that he reached out to five-star quarterback Jacob Eason, who signed his financial aid agreement in September and is set to arrive at Georgia in January.
According to Jeff Ermann of Inside Maryland Sports (247Sports Maryland affiliate), Richt and Maryland have spoken about the opening and a meeting could come as soon as Tuesday.
“Now that I’m not recruiting, there’s really nothing on my calendar”, he said. It was Richt’s inability to match Dooley in the national championship department, however, that was ultimately his undoing. The Bulldogs lost in the 2011 and 2012 SEC championship games. He’s a former Miami quarterback, and our Canes readers have been on board for weeks with the idea of a return.
At one point on Monday, Houston coach Tom Herman said he had “agreed in principle” to a new contract with the Cougars.
His goodbye presser showed no hint of bitterness, and the fact that he even gave a goodbye presser at the school that just let him go shows the relative lack of ego we’re dealing with.
