Donald Trump Claims He Thought Meeting With African-American Pastors Was an
A much anticipated meeting between Donald Trump and about 100 black pastors and religious leaders was abruptly canceled when it became apparent that a lot of them would not endorse the candidate.
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump met a group of black pastors on Monday over the objection of other African-American clergy and academics who had assailed what they called the candidate’s racially charged rhetoric.
“I can’t prove it, but I can say it”.
Trump campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks said in an email that Trump would still be holding a private meeting with the group on Monday before departing for a rally in Georgia.
Trump predicted some of the 100 black evangelical leaders would endorse him after the meeting, nonetheless.
“We are concerned that your choice to meet with Mr. Trump, particularly in such a visible way, will not only de-radicalize the Black prophetic political tradition, but will also give Trump the appearance of legitimacy among those who follow your leadership and respect your position as clergy”, the letter said. Mr. Trump, if I say people have said Trump’s not worth ten billion dollars and people were saying- You wouldn’t make a business deal based on retweets and hearsay.
Trump has ignited a number of racial controversies on the campaign trail, such as when he suggested a Black Lives Matter heckler “should have been roughed up”.
In recent days, several of those pastors announced that they would not be attending the meeting, as a result of the backlash from their congregants.
“I have a very good memory, I’ll tell you”, Trump said.
Trump came under fire last week after saying at a rally and on television that he had seen thousands of people in Jersey City cheer the collapse of the twin towers. The event was supposed to show Trump’s extensive reach in the evangelical community but instead resulted in spotlighting the deep division that exists among the religious faithful over Trump’s candidacy.
Leaders such as Bishop Clarence McClendon spoke out angrily after refusing Trump’s invitation. However, Scott, with the permission of the Trump campaign, invited more pastors and the invitation list ballooned to more than 100.
“Some of these pastors have never even met Trump yet”, Scott said. “The bottom line is that Donald Trump is lying, if you look at what he said”. “Sometime later he will get into an argument on “Meet the Press” in which he insists there is video of them endorsing him”. “But if they got that perception, then the people that we are trying to help and take to the next level are misunderstood”, Morton said. And the people, that’s all you need is a picture, all you need is pastors lined up, you really don’t have to endorse.
“The only thing that disqualifies anyone from being president is not getting enough votes or not being a us citizen or 35, other than that, nothing disqualifies you”, Christie said.
