Ben Carson calls for increased aid to refugee camps
“I had the opportunity to talk to numerous Syrian refugees and ask them, ‘What is your supreme desire?’ And it was pretty pretty uniform: They want to go back home, obviously”. There is no evidence that a Syrian refugee was among the jihadists who attacked multiple Paris nightspots on November 13, but Trudeau has faced growing calls to rethink the plan over the last two weeks.
But Halifax Mayor Mike Savage, whose city has offered to take more than its proportional share of the refugees, said Canada can’t let “perfect be the enemy of (a) better” response.
He’s since shaved it off, one of many changes his family’s been through since they’ve become refugees – including the arrival of their third son.
More than 500 officials have been assigned to work on the massive resettlement program, one of the largest of its kind in the world as it relates to the Syrian refugee crisis.
Carson made the comments as he wrapped up his visit to refugee camps in Jordan.
“There’s nothing that will turn the momentum off more than if people want to help, and they get no answer at the other end of the phone or they don’t know who to phone”, said McCallum.
Carson on Tuesday said his trip was “enlightening”, and shared that “what’s actually going on and what people actually believe is so different, than the actuality”.
Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer, having just returned from a visit to Jordan with Ben Carson, argued Monday that the United States should focus on assisting relief efforts in the Middle East rather than bringing refugees to the U.S.
“Millions of refugees have now been waiting years for the end of the war to come in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey”.
“I did not detect any great desire for them to come to the United States”, he told reporters.
Colyer suggests Americans who want to help Syrian refugees make donations to organizations like the Red Cross or International Medical Corps.
Health issues will not be a barrier for Syrian refugees seeking safety in Canada.
Colyer said he agrees with the security concerns, although he doesn’t necessarily think it’s the most important concern.
Like most candidates, Carson has stated the ultimate solution to problem is solving current Syrian civil war.
“The Jordanians have roughly 1.4 million Syrian refugees living in their country”, he continued. “Then they have communal areas for sports and entertainment, church, whatever else you want to do there”. They were briefed by the camp manager and aid organizations on the challenges at hand, including ensuring adequate water supplies and food for the camp’s 80,000 residents. These countries have been home to hundreds of thousands of refugees since the conflict in Syria began.
