Price is Right for Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox are reportedly in agreement with David Price on a seven-year deal worth $217 million, the Boston Globe reported Tuesday.
The reported deal would be the largest annual contract in history for a pitcher, topping Clayton Kershaw’s seven-year, $210 million package with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays will move on with a rotation including Marcus Stroman, R.A. Dickey, Marco Estrada and J.A. Happ. But he struggled in the AL playoffs, going 1-2 with a 6.17 ERA in the Blue Jays’ first postseason action since 1993.
The Price acquisition also directly addresses one of Boston’s primary weaknesses in 2015, when it finished 78-84 and in last place in the AL East. Last season, Boston used 12 different starting pitchers, and none of them reached 200 innings. While with the Tigers in 2014, Dombrowski traded Drew Smyly to the Rays and Austin Jackson to the Mariners as part of a three-team trade that brought Price to Detroit.
Price, a five-time All-Star and 2012 Cy Young Award victor, is 104-56 with a 3.09 E.R.A.
