Adele Destroys Taylor Swift in First Week of Album Sales
Last year, Swift also enjoyed considerable success for after pulling her music of Spotify, as her “1989” album sold 1.3 million in its first week.
The previous record for single-week album sales in the United States was held by ‘N Sync, whose 2000 album No Strings attached sold 2.4 million copies in tis first week.
Naturally, Adele’s album is 2015’s best seller, surpassing the 1.8 million copies Taylor Swift’s “1989” album sold.
Adele, the wildly popular British singer, released her third studio album 25 on November 20. Her last album, 21, didn’t have almost the opening week 25 did, and it topped the Billboard 200 for 24 non-consecutive weeks, also a record. All of the additional 98,000 units sold in the equivalent units metric come from single songs sold and streams of her single “Hello.”
Gigi Johnson, director of UCLA’s Center for Music Innovation, said of the 3 million copies sold in the first week: “To get this number, to get this volume, you’re getting to the ‘not usual music buyer'”.
Adele’s new album has been smashing records all over the world after becoming one of the fastest selling pieces of music in history. The album sold 11.2 million in the US alone. Case in point: One Direction’s Made in the A.M. was down a spot to #3 in its second week with 108,000 units, down 76% from the first week sales.
The juggernaut known as ADELE’s “25” continues to rack up impressive sales figures.
Eminem might have slagged them off, but the turn of the century was the reign of the boy bands and Backstreet Boys’ Black and Blue sold 1.591,000 in its first week – and broke the global sales record selling more than 5 million worldwide.
“In a move comparable to the release of a new Smiths album or John Virgo bowing to intense global pressure to return to the arena of the televised trick shot, Adele has announced that she will be singing in public in a series of giant arenas next year”.
Adele has been promoting her new album and recently made appearances on “Saturday Night Live” with Matthew McConaughey, who served as the host of the show, and on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”.
