USC Names Helton Permanent Coach
Helton acknowledged Monday that he’s not a “glitzy” hire. Helton’s not John Harbaugh, whose brother Jim turned USC’s Pac-12 title game opponent, Stanford, into the powerhouse it is today. The dominant performance also likely vaulted the 6-foot-3, 242-pound running back to the forefront of the Heisman Trophy race heading into this week’s Southeastern Conference championship game against Florida.
The school’s athletic director Pat Haden said in a statement that they didn’t need to look for someone else because someone deserving was already in front of them, waiting to be called.
“The big thing that he always wants to do is everything that he can do to help the team”, Alabama coach Nick Saban said. I became convinced not only after watching his team play, but also after spending part of a morning with him in his office, listening to him speak with great humility and passion about his players, checking out the giant books on his coffee tables that contained photos of those players and their parents. “He’s not fake. He’s very real, and that’s why I love him”. “These past few weeks, we’ve really established this physical, hard-nosed football type of identity, and going forward, I think that’s the best chance we have to win against Stanford”.
USC hired Helton as its permanent coach Monday, removing the interim tag five days before the Trojans face Stanford in the Pac-12 championship game. But his hiring raised questions about Haden’s ambition.
McCaffrey was named Offensive Player of the Year, while Shaw and Mike Leach of Washington State were co-Coaches of the Year. There were plenty of good opportunities for me to jump on the bandwagon, but I just was never that into basketball.
USC’s decision to promote from within had some NFL implications with regards to Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, per NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. That probably disappointed some fans, who wanted a big-name hire.
“During my six years here, I have learned the standard of excellence that it takes to be a Trojan”, Helton said.
Helton said he would evaluate the coaches after the season.
The semester may be coming to an end, but around here, that just means there’s more USC Sports news than ever to tackle.
“People outside (USC), they might not know about him”, Davis said.
Although Helton’s demeanor is easygoing, he has been aggressive as an interim coach, ordering Wilcox to have his defense man-to-man, including against UCLA. Stanford defeated USC 41-31 earlier in the year, when Steve Sarkisian was still coaching the team.
To cap it all off, and for your comedic relief, we go back and expose our most vulnerable moments in this season’s Sport SCene’s blooper reel.
Thank you all for watching, and see you next year!
