Maryland Interested in Mark Richt
Richt finished his career at Georgia with a 145-51 record and the Bulldogs participated in a bowl game in each of his 15 seasons. I’m blessed in that way and thankful about that, but I’m just not ready to say what I want to do yet.
The wins came in bunches year in and year out, but the big-game opportunities never materialized. He’s universally hailed as a good dude. Instead, he spoke with passion about the chance to coach again and to have more direct involvement in coaching quarterbacks and calling plays.
It may sound like I’m making excuses for a guy that was making almost four million dollars a year. “Quite honestly, I believe in the players we have here now”. Maryland interim coach Mike Locksley formally interviewed for the job on Monday afternoon, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, although it remains unclear where his candidacy ranks among other potential hires.
At one point on Monday, Houston coach Tom Herman said he had “agreed in principle” to a new contract with the Cougars.
In the meantime, none of the current openings are ideal. Highlighting this contrast was one particular exchange, when McGarity was asked about the impending coaching search.
Richt was contacted by “about five” different schools since news of his exit at Georgia was official. It was Richt hiring a mediocre OC from the St. Louis Rams.
“There is not a better coach in college football”. He wants to go to Georgia.
University of Georgia Head Football Coach-In-Waning Mark Richt had a Monday press conference with UGA AD Greg McGarity where he addressed his dismissal and McGarity said a whole lot of nothing…
Some have speculated this includes some sort of fundraising role. “… Our sport is a very passionate sport and a very public sport”. “It has not been defined totally. Just anyway I can be helpful”. “Upset and concerned. But as of right now we are both taking a wait-and-see approach before we do or say anything”. “Coach Richt was a quarterback himself”. He had 79 players drafted, the most of any head coach since 2002. I don’t have any indication (a coaching change) is going to happen. Maybe that’s why there weren’t a lot of protests or actual vigils after Richt was sacked Sunday, but there were a couple on the UGA campus past year when then running back Todd Gurley was first suspended by the NCAA. I have no clue what his specific financial situation is, but Richt has done well for himself. “You might get really excited about that”. Don’t jump the gun.
He said he was at peace with the school’s decision saying you couldn’t have all the excitement without the disappointment. He has not visited any other schools since he committed to UGA.
The Terps have been linked to several high-profile candidates as athletic director Kevin Anderson continues his search for a new coach. “I understand that. I accept that responsibility”. This is an idea cooked up on the Internet.
“I’m really looking forward to coaching these boys one more time”, Richt told reporters. Let’s go over those, too.
