Josh McCown Out For Season With Broken Collarbone
It was announced Tuesday that McCown would be out for the rest of the season with a broken collarbone, and Wednesday’s roster move confirms he will not play again this year.
The Cleveland Browns have named a starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against Cincinnati – and it’s not Johnny Manziel. “He was prepared, played well and put us in position to win”. Josh McCown, who started the game at quarterback, suffered a collarbone injury so he is most likely out for the season. The Cleveland Browns have been looking for a quality starting quarterback for years now, but have still yet to find their franchise signal-caller. McCown’s quarterback rating is 93.3.
The news, reported by Adam Schefter, is a major blow for the Browns and in particular for McCown. Davis almost engineered a successful come-from-behind victory on Monday night versus the Ravens but a blocked field goal-turned-touchdown for Baltimore cost Cleveland the game. “The decision was made it’s Austin for this week”. He needs to play like he did in a September start against the Tennessee Titans, or in his last game, when he threw for 372 yards with one touchdown and one interception against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Re-signing with the Browns would give him another opportunity to prove he can be a capable wide receiver at the next level after several up-and-down stints under center with a few different teams. He returned from a Week 1 concussion and fought through shoulder and rib injuries before being knocked out Monday when 302-pound defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan picked him up and landed on top of him on his right shoulder. McCown signed a three year deal with the Browns back in February.
McCown was 21-for-38 for 212 yards and a touchdown, while Davis completed seven of 10 passes for 77 yards and a score. He completed 170 of 302 passes (56.3 percent) for 1,953 yards with nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
The selection of Davis as starter is a controversial one in Cleveland with many still hoping former first-round pick Manziel can develop into a star for the Browns.
Davis now gets to show the Browns what he can do with more time to prepare.
However, Pettine still left the door open for Manziel to start later this season.
“Worst possible scenario for Josh”, Pettine said.
