A Turkish court is asking experts to decide whether comparing President
Turkish court has ordered experts to examine whether President Erdogan resembled the “Lord of the Rings” character of Gollum, after memes appeared comparing the two.
It is not known precisely what criteria the experts will use to arrive at their decision.
The judge presiding over the case admitted he has not seen the fantasy blockbusters directed by Peter Jackson. In the Lord of the Rings his longing for the ring distorted his body and mind.
British daily, The Telegraph, reported that an expert panel, which will reportedly include two academics, two behavioural experts and an expert on cinema and television productions, has been appointed to come to the much needed conclusion.
The judge in the case made the decision saying he had not seen the wildly popular movies.
In October, a physician named Bilgin Ciftci was sacked from his job at the Public Health Institution of Turkey after he shared a meme that juxtaposed Gollum (a slimy, menacing humanoid) and Erdogan in a series of postures, the Turkish newspaper Today’s Zaman reports. His leadership has certainly received some well-deserved criticism: Under Erdogan, journalists who have spoken out against the leading administration have been silenced, and businesses whose leaders are sympathetic to the opposition have been punished.
Mr Erdogan’s legal team has often backed cases brought by lawyers and private individuals against people who have allegedly insulted him. According to Fox News, he could be sentenced to up to two years in prison for insulting Erdogan, which is a crime in Turkey.
