Emission eye on diesel cars
The lawsuit says the plaintiff felt “shocked and violated” when he found out about Volkswagen’s failures and is anxious he won’t be able to sell the vehicle at all.
Meanwhile, reports surfaced Tuesday that Volkswagen is planning to conduct a voluntary recall of 324,000 diesel cars in India to remove the cheating software, even as emissions rules in the country are less stringent than other advanced economies.
It’s widely expected to have to pay out tens of billions of euros to cover fines, lawsuits and repairs after admitting to cheating American diesel emissions tests.
Models that have been recalled include the VW Polo, VW Vento, VW Jetta, VW Passat, Audi A4, Audi A3, Skoda Rapid, Audi Q3, which were sold between 2008 to November 2015.
The scandal, which forced Volkswagen chief executive Martin Winterkorn’s resignation, has weighed on the company’s finances.
Volkswagen has apparently reached an agreement with banks on the terms of a bridging loan to help it shoulder the cost of the emissions scandal.
In November, the company announced plans to cap spending next year at around 12bn, which is 1bn less than the budget for the previous year.
Company officials who attended the meeting declined to comment but said a statement would be issued.
Cars fitted with the EA189 series of engines are recalled. Anant Geete, Minister of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, said that government has also chose to test all diesel vehicles to check for violations of emission norms in India.
The German carmaker has said that it has presented a possible solutions for the affected cars to ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) and Ministry of Heavy Industries.
In October, the company’s Indian unit said it was recalling 389 units of its best-selling Polo hatchback produced in September for inspection and preventive fix of a glitch in the handbrake.
“Once approved from the competent authorities, the respective brands of the Volkswagen Group in India will carry out necessary actions in a step-wise manner”, it said.
