The Roundup-Jazz 103, Warriors 106
Curry hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with under a minute left and finished with 26 points as the Warriors escaped at Utah with a 106-103 victory on Monday that improved their record to 19-0.
The Utah Jazz gave the Golden State Warriors all they could handle-and, quite honestly, more than any other team has so far this season-but in the end, Stephen Curry was just too much to handle.
Curry was 1 of 10 from 3-point range and the Warriors made 42.4 percent from the field in last season’s visit to Time Warner Cable Arena, but they won 106-101 on November 28, 2014 behind reserve forward Marreese Speights’ 27 points.
With the score tied at 101 with 51 seconds left, Curry hit a three-pointer from the left wing to give the Warriors the lead.
Utah was step-for-step with the defending champs in the first half when Clark came off the bench and lit up his former team for 12 points – on four 3-pointers – in the final five minutes of the half, giving the Warriors a 53-48 lead at the break. This game went down to the wire and it got me thinking: we could actually see this in the first round in the playoffs. “Just because we are 19-0 doesn’t mean we can just show up and blow teams out and guarantee a win…” Harrison Barnes was out dealing with his injured ankle, Stephen Curry was battling a minor sinus infection and the game was played at an abnormally high altitude, but the contest was still closer than any member of the Warriors would have liked.
Favors put Utah up by one late in the fourth quarter, only for Golden State to hit back immediately through Curry and Green.
Klay Thompson added 20 points for the Warriors, including four 3-pointers. Then Curry hit another 3-pointer.
The NBA season, in a nutshell. Alec Burks scored six straight and Favors gave the Jazz a 99-97 lead on a three-point play.
If they win, they’ll tie a 131-year-old record for the longest season-opening winning streak by any professional sports team, which was set by the St. Louis Maroons baseball team in 1884. They’re very well-coached. They have a very good team concept.
“I felt like we came out from the beginning of the game and had a defensive mindset”, Bradley said. It’s hard to predict their first loss because they offer more potential paths to victory than any team in recent memory. “The more pressure, the bigger the moment, the more comfortable our guys feel”. The Jazz committed only eight turnovers, and, consequently, the Warriors weren’t able to get out in transition as much as they usually do-they managed only five fast-break points all night. Small ball is the future, but 7-foot tall players will always be hard to slow down, especially a talented one like Gobert.
You certainly don’t want to be the team that gets bumped. Snyder said there are a lot of variables in matching up – a hot shooter, a matchup they like, foul trouble. That’s a credit to the team’s confidence in its identity as a bruising, interior-focused team at a time when that approach has often been called outdated.
Curry’s father, Dell, will be honored during a halftime ceremony Wednesday night for his contributions to the Hornets organization.
The Jazz host the Magic on Thursday.
