Juneau mayor died of natural causes
In their official statement, police acknowledged rumours of an assault but said those rumours were “speculation”.
Juneau police plan to release an update on the death of the mayor of Alaska’s capital city. In this photo taken Monday night, November 30, 2015, DJ Thomson, right, and Joyce Levine light candles on Kennedy Street after hearing about the death of Mayor Stephen “Greg” Fisk in Juneau, Alaska.
A man found Fisk’s body at a residence Monday afternoon and alerted authorities.
Juneau police told CNN at the time that Fisk had been discovered with injuries but that their cause was unclear. “It could look like there was an assault that took place and that’s why the first looks and people thought an assault took place, but it’s consistent with the fall and that’s the information we got back from the medical examiner as well”, Johnson said.
Police say Fisk had injuries, but have tentatively ruled out gunshots, drugs or suicide and are awaiting autopsy results.
“They’re expensive, but if they’re the best choice for democracy, then they’re worth it”, said Assembly member Jesse Kiehl, adding the Assembly will have to carefully weigh the costs. The department fielded media inquiries from around the country, police spokeswoman Erann Kalwara said Tuesday. Sometimes, it’s obvious at the scene that a person died of natural causes.
Fisk, who owned a fisheries consulting firm, easily defeated incumbent mayor Merrill Sanford in October’s election.
“We sincerely appreciate the support of the community and we recognize that, as would be the case with any public figure, his death brings a lot of attention”, he said.
Ian Fisk previously stated in an email that his family is grieving privately. He said he noted multiple times that it also was possible that Fisk had fallen. When he asked King to be his campaign chairman, King didn’t give Fisk much of a chance but helped out in minor ways, he said. Johnson said it’s likely Fisk fell against a counter after experiencing a heart issue. Fisk was sworn in October 20, said city clerk Laurie Sica. Deputy Mayor Mary Becker is now serving as acting mayor under state law.
