Health officials urge people to get tested on World AIDS Day

TAIPEI-An expert in infectious diseases said yesterday that anybody who has unprotected sex could be at risk of contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), citing figures showing a higher percentage of heterosexuals contracting the disease over the past year. “HIV is about global health and we need to fast truck and quicken the pace of action”, he said. While worldwide, HIV infection rates are decreasing generally, UNICEF found that infections among people aged 10-19 have increased in Asia and the Pacific region, home to more than half of the world’s adolescents.

While new cases of HIV/AIDS in the state are falling, officials emphasize the importance of getting screened and taking preventative methods.

In fact, in southern IL, 86 percent of new cases are in people between the ages of 15-24 years old.
