Health officials urge people to get tested on World AIDS Day

TAIPEI-An expert in infectious diseases said yesterday that anybody who has unprotected sex could be at risk of contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), citing figures showing a higher percentage of heterosexuals contracting the disease over the past year. “HIV is about global health and we need to fast truck and quicken the pace of action”, he said. Marking World AIDS Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday called for a fast-track approach to break the epidemic and prevent it from rebounding.
These gains, said Abdool Karim, could be attributed to education and the use of condoms, which dominated the early response to the HIV epidemic. “I don’t have statistics to say what those are but it can affect anyone and that’s why awareness and prevention is so important”. He says the public needs to continue to be educated so they will get tested, get treatment, and help stop the spread of the virus.
This number includes the eleven individuals who have been diagnosed with HIV this year. “And increasingly we are able to refine our efforts and be more precise in our ability to reach people who might otherwise be left behind”, he added.
While worldwide, HIV infection rates are decreasing generally, UNICEF found that infections among people aged 10-19 have increased in Asia and the Pacific region, home to more than half of the world’s adolescents.
While new cases of HIV/AIDS in the state are falling, officials emphasize the importance of getting screened and taking preventative methods.
In fact, in southern IL, 86 percent of new cases are in people between the ages of 15-24 years old.
