When asked by Chief District Judge Gilbert Martinez if he understood his rights, Dear replied, “no questions”. “I will tell you, there is a tremendous group of people that think it’s awful, all of the videos that they’ve seen with some of these people from Planned Parenthood talking about it like you’re selling parts to a vehicle”. Neighbors have described Dear as a loner who had been known to hand out anti-Obama propaganda while calling for the president’s impeachment.
The alleged gunman’s murderous rampage at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic wasn’t the first time he targeted the organization, his ex-wife said.
Police have declined to speculate on a motive for the attack.
Public Defender Daniel King, who represented Colorado theater shooter James Holmes, stood beside Dear and will act as his counsel.
Dear appeared in court on Monday ahead of being formally charged on 9 December over the attack in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Friday.
Iraq War veteran Ke’Arre Stewart, 29; mother-of-two Jennifer Markovsky, 36 and University of Colorado police officer Garrett Swasey, 44, were killed in the shooting.
“Certain comments from elected officials and candidates since the release of that (initial) statement do not reflect the views of the Colorado Republican Party”, chairman Steve House said.
“I wouldn’t have married him if I had known he was the way he was”, she said firmly.
In 1992, Dear was arrested after being suspected of rape in SC, but no records showed that he was ever convicted of the crime.
Organized by Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, the vigil was a solemn ceremony led by local clergy.
Ms Dunlop said Planned Parenthood officials were doing their best to keep their network of health clinics open around the country, despite uncertainty over the future of continued federal support.
