Mark Richt to become Miami Hurricanes coach
According to Peter Ariz of CanesInSight.com and various sources, former Georgia Bulldog head coach Mark Richt is expected to be named the next head coach of the Hurricanes.
Any coach who spends 15 years at a major program like Georgia in a tough conference like the SEC must be doing something right. Richt will replace Al Golden, who was sacked mid-season after dismal 58-0 loss to Clemson.
Mark Richt will be the 23rd head coach in history for the Hurricanes football program.
Richt hasn’t exactly won a lot of big games the past few seasons in Athens.
Virginia now goes back to the drawing board to focus on other candidates. The wheels turned quickly at Miami as Richt reportedly interviewed over the weekend.
The Hurricanes finished the regular season 4-1 under interim coach Larry Scott, who is still slated to coach Miami’s bowl game.
The Hurricanes will enter 2016 with a heralded new coach, an experienced quarterback, a talented roster – and a revamped home.
Mark Richt has been part of some of Miami’s biggest wins and partially responsible for some of its most demoralizing defeats. Richt is a strong recruiter inside and outside of South Florida, having a top-10 ranked class by ESPN each of the last six seasons at Georgia.
Brandt also predicted that former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano would get the Rutgers job, where he has coached before, and that Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp would be hired at SC.
Top Miami staff and other coaches had not been informed of the hire Wednesday night, largely because of the incomplete details. When Richt spoke to the media about his departure from UGA on Monday he said, “If and when I do coach again, I’ll look forward to coaching again, being more hands on”.
Miami has a solid nucleus of young talent, beginning with sophomore quarterback Brad Kaaya, who is already fifth on the program’s all-time passing list.
Richt played quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes from 1979-82. In fact, at least one projection has Miami playing in the Music City Bowl against … Now he’s the point guard for a team looking like a potential force in the Atlantic Coast Conference after beating No. 22 Butler 85-75 in the championship game of the Puerto Rico Tipoff.
But in the end, it was Richt – who earlier this week suggested that he might not coach again.
