IDW To Publish Back To The Future Anthology

After writer and director Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale recently gave the whole “over our dead bodies” speech about the possibility of a remake or sequel in their lifetime, it now looks like that ban doesn’t extend to comic books.

Back to the Future is making a comeback thanks to a new comic book series from IDW Publishing.

But how interesting can a Back to the Future story be without time travel? In a press release that was issued from the future, naturally, we learned that co-creator Bob Gale will be co-writing the series along with IDW regulars John Barber (Transformers) and Erik Burnham (Ghostbusters).

Marty McFly has been to the past, present and future, and now he’s coming to comic books.

“We’ve subtitled this Untold Tales and Alternate Timelines because for years, fans have asked questions about things that happened before the events of the trilogy, in between the events of the trilogy, or in our alternate realities”. So I thought that a series focused on tales in these areas, dealing with the characters as we know them from the movies, answering some of these questions, would be worthwhile. The artists are Brent Schoonover (Batman ’66) and Dan Schoening (Ghostbusters).

This first issue will feature standard covers by Schoening, Schoonover, and Amy Mebberson (My Little Pony), and an original art styled cover by Schoening as part of IDW’s October Artist’s Edition Month.

While the first issue will deal with Marty and Doc crossing paths for the first time, the second will reportedly fix on how Doc got involved in the Manhattan Project and how his house was burnt down.

Gale and the Back to the Future comics team will be at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 9 at 1 p.m.at the IDW booth (#2743).

The first issue of the four-part Back to the Future miniseries goes on sale in October.
