Edmonton Rallies To Beat RedBlacks
Jordan Lynch scored on a quarterback sneak with just over three minutes left, providing the winning points as the Edmonton Eskimos won the Grey Cup 26-20 over Ottawa in Winnipeg. But a touchdown pass to Akeem Shavers with 12 seconds left gave the Eskimos a one-point lead heading into halftime. He’s 40 years old and has won two Grey Cups before, but lost his last appearance in the big game, back in 2013 when he directed the Tiger-Cats there in just his second season in Hamilton.
The ’81 Ottawa Rough Riders took a 13-0 lead after the first quarter and a 20-1 lead at the half before losing 26-23 to the Eskimos on a last-second Dave Cutler field goal. But it was Jones successfully challenging an incompletion that was ultimately changed to pass interference against Ottawa’s Brandon Sermons that put Edmonton on the Redblacks’ 10-yard line.
It is Edmonton’s 14th Grey Cup crown, the second most in CFL history behind the Toronto Argonauts’ 16 championships.
Redblacks fans Donald Maisonneuve and Anne Proulx made a last-minute decision Wednesday to drive to Winnipeg for the game.
The contest was a defensive battle, especially in the second half as Edmonton outscored Ottawa just 9-4.
Henry Burris found Patrick Lavoie for a touchdown on the REDBLACKS first posession of the game.
“I wanted to get it for my family, the guys in this locker-room, and for the city of Ottawa”.
CFL most outstanding player Henry Burris and the RedBlacks stormed out to a 13-0 lead before Reilly even touched the ball thanks to a Kendial Lawrence fumble, but the Eskimos didn’t panic and carved out a 17-3 run over the next quarter and a half to take a 17-16 lead into the break. “We’re going to beat them up on all aspects of the game”. Whyte booted a convert, single and field goal while Grant Shaw added another single.
A 41-yard pass interference penalty set up the next Ottawa points, another 33-yard Milo field goal, while Edmonton put up a punt single.
Not long after being crowned champions, Mike Reilly is awarded the MVP of the game, Shamawd Chambers is named the Most Valuable Canadian, and Jeffrey Orridge presents the precious Grey Cup to the Edmonton Eskimos. One of the Stampeders touchdown horses was allowed on the sidelines at the Rogers Centre but wasn’t permitted to gallop along the sidelines when Calgary scored due to safety concerns and a lack of space.
But after earning a single on Sean Whyte’s missed 45-yard field goal, Edmonton took its first lead of the game on Shavers’ touchdown.
