Hyde: Canes have interviewed Mullen, Schiano
Hyde reported that both former Hurricanes coach Butch Davis, 64, and former Rutgers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano interviewed for the job, as well. Richt was a quarterback for the Hurricanes from 1979-1982 and would be returning to his alma mater for the first time since his playing days. ESPN’s Mark Schlabach has reported that Mark Richt will interview for this job as well as the Miami gig, and the fact that Richt has his pick of jobs is no surprise. Richt would be replacing Al Golden, who was sacked during the season. He led UGA to a 9-3 record, and a 5-3 record in the SEC, but due to injuries on offense and the lack of consistency at quarterback, the Bulldogs failed to win the SEC East, despite being big favorites.
Richt was an assistant coach at Florida State before taking the Georgia job.
Reports state that the University of Miami and Missouri University have already approached him about head coaching vacancies at their schools.
It seemed a natural, dovetailing marriage from the moment the Georgia Bulldogs and Richt parted ways after 15 seasons this past Sunday, with Miami available and looking and Richt suddenly on the rebound.
Since his injury, he has built a special relationship with Richt and the Georgia Football program.
He is a South Florida native and played for Howard Schnellenberger at Miami, when the Hurricanes were just becoming the program that would win five national championships in 19 seasons.
Fox, who has been the head coach of the men’s basketball team since 2009, spoke about a tough win against Oakland on Tuesday night before he was asked by a reporter on why it’s been a tough week.
Mark Richt is headed back from where he came.
Richt was a successful coach at Georgia in a very competitive SEC. The famously placid exterior has always hidden a much more competitive nature than those on the outside get to see.
“Several sources told CBS Sports on Wednesday afternoon they believe Richt is Miami’s No. 1 candidate”.
“A couple years ago, I was here at dinner while I was signing a contract at Penn State and then the next year I was in Colorado and like four or five different cities in one day when I was sitting here at this award”, Mullen said.
CanesInSight.com had the initial report.
Unlike so many of Georgia’ bowl games in the past, this upcoming one doesn’t fell like a consolation prize after a disappointing season, but rather the final chapter in the proud legacy of the Mark Richt Era in Athens.
