World AIDS Day observed at GRH

Tuesday morning, Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) received the World AIDS Day Leadership Award from the End AIDS NY 2020 Coalition at The Apollo Theater in New York City.

When Ronald Reagan was president of the United States, he was deep into his second term in the late 1980s before he said the word “AIDS” even though so many lives had been lost to the disease.

The new estimate is 6.4 percent higher than figures released last December, which at that time predicted 734,000 HIV-positive cases.

“This year is the first year that there have been no mother to newborn transmissions”, Cuomo said.

It said other elements of this package include behaviour-change communication, the consistent use of male and female condoms and prevention programmes for key populations, including harm reduction for people who use drugs.

It observed that some low – and middle-income countries have made remarkable progress towards universal access to HIV services: 12 countries have ensured that 60 per cent or more of all people living with HIV are aware of their infection and receiving antiretroviral therapy. The specialist announced information about the number of HIV-positive people in the country.

“Stigma surrounding HIV continues to prevent people from getting tested and from seeking treatment and support”. “I put it out there because I want people to start talking openly and honestly, not only about drug addiction, but also HIV and sexual health”.
