London Fire Brigade apologises after ‘no hipsters injured’ tweet
The “hipster” quip divided the audience, with some thinking it was amusing to make fun of the customers at the area’s trendy restaurants, and others chiding the Fire Brigade for making fun of the situation after people had lost their livelihoods.
The recent blaze allegedly involving “hipsters” broke out at a pop-up restaurant in London’s Shoreditch district, packed with bars, restaurants and clubs popular among the hip crowd.
Street food trader Hank’s Po” Boys posted: “Hard work and livelihoods ruined and you make a joke of it?
Opinions were split however, with some people claiming “it was a amusing tweet”. Completely unprofessional and insulting to many people’.
@LucyLovelace1 said: “It was amusing people need to lighten up”.
@LondonFire pretty poor taste, this tweet. “Ridiculous”.
More than 30 firefighters helped to tackle the blaze on Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch from 03:45 BST.
It said: “Sorry if we caused any offence by using the term hipsters”. It hoped the businesses affected by the blaze would be back on track soon, it added. It took around two hours to get the fire under control and around half the building was destroyed.
“Thankfully there were no injuries“, the statement on the government website simply said.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
