On Disabilities Day, Remember Those Suffering in N. Korea
On the occasion, national awards were also conferred on outstanding persons with disabilities and individuals and organisations that are working for the empowerment of persons with disabilities.
Since 2015, the Department of Economic and Social Affair organizes a Photo Exhibition. The UN Enable Photo Exhibition will work to help change misperceptions to counter stigma and stereotyping about persons with disabilities.

Among the commemorative events around the world, at United Nations headquarters, the Day will be celebrated with an event featuring panel discussions on such themes as “Accessible New Urban Agenda and inclusion of persons with disabilities” and ‘Invisible disabilities’.
“We have seen progress across the world, but persons with disabilities remain one of the most marginalized groups today”, Ms. Bokova said.
Over 1 billion people have some form of disability.
Reassuring her government’s firm commitment to always stand beside the physically-challenged people, Hasina said the monthly allowance of some 6 lakh physically-challenged people would be raised further from the existing Tk 500.
She said the Ministry of Women Affairs had recruited some persons with disabilities into Federal Civil Service and had created disability desks in the office of the head of civil service of the federation, among others.
Mr Dennis Okoro, the Director, MTN Foundation, said taking care of persons with disabilities was part of the sustainable development goals.
Mr David Anyale, the Executive Director, Centre for Citizens with Disabilities, urgedthe Federal Government to pass into law the Disability Bill.
The government provides a monthly allowance of MVR2,500 to anyone registered as a person with disability.
