Two suspects dead after mass killing in California
Farook worked as an environmental inspector for San Bernardino County, and had been attending a holiday party at the center, authorities said.
It was the nation’s deadliest shooting incident since December 14, 2012, when a young man killed 26 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. “There’s possibility, but we don’t know yet”, he said.
The shooting occurred at the IRC’s conference center, which the San Bernardo County Health Department was renting out for an event.
“We don’t know why they did it. We don’t know at this point the extent of their plans”, Obama said, warning against passing judgment before conclusions are drawn.
Khan says other family members expressed their sadness over the shootings. Co-worker Patrick Baccari told the paper that Farook traveled to Saudi Arabia and returned married to Malik, whom he met online. He did not elaborate.
But the police chief said he did not believe this was a crime committed in the heat of the moment.
The Council of American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights group, held a press conference on Wednesday night alongside Farook’s brother-in-law. He said he was in shock, condemned the violence, and had “absolutely no idea why he would do this”.
A police official also told local news outlet KCAL9-TV that the suspects threw a fake pipe bomb out of the SUV during the police chase.
Police say Farook and Malik were armed with four weapons, including two assault rifles.
Television news helicopters captured the aftermath, as officers slowly approached the mangled SUV. He said she wrote: “People shot”.
